Who and What Is the Antichrist's Restrainer?
In 2 Thessalonians 2, the Apostle Paul describes a mysterious force or entity that is currently holding back (restraining) the Antichrist from being fully revealed. Paul writes that “the mystery of lawlessness is already at work,” but something is preventing the “man of lawlessness” (the Antichrist) from appearing until the proper time. Once this restrainer is removed, the Antichrist will be revealed and will perform his deceptive signs, wonders, and miracles—powered by Satan.
Many interpreters see the restrainer as the Holy Spirit working through the Church, or as a combination of the Church and the restraining influence of law and order in the world. However, according to this understanding, the restrainer is the angel who holds the key to the Abyss (the bottomless pit), as described in Revelation 9:1–2 and 20:1–3.
This angel has authority over the gate of the Abyss, where certain demonic forces (fallen angels/spirits) are currently imprisoned or held in check. These same demonic entities will later be released to empower:
- The Antichrist himself, and
- The second beast—the tech billionaire whose brand/mark is “X”—who will perform great signs, give “breath” to the image of the first beast, and enforce the mark of the beast.
When this restraining angel is removed from his post (or his restraining action ceases), the full release of these demonic powers will begin. This removal marks a key turning point in the end times.
The sequence unfolds first in the spiritual realm—the “second heaven” (the cosmic/universal space beyond Earth). There, war breaks out in heaven (Revelation 12): Michael and his angels fight against the dragon (Satan) and his angels. Satan and his forces are defeated and cast down to the earth. “The great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan… He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him” (Revelation 12:9).
Only after this heavenly defeat and casting down do the fallen forces—now on Earth in greater power—begin to fully empower the Antichrist. At that moment, the American president (symbolic of mighty Babylon, the dominant world power) will believe he has the opportunity to rule forever—not merely as a political leader, but as a divine savior. Empowered by Satan and the released demonic/alien technologies, he will conquer the entire world and establish global rule under his authority. This is exactly what the first seal of Revelation shows: a rider on a white horse, given a crown and sent out “as a conqueror bent on conquest” (Revelation 6:2).
He will imagine his dominion is eternal, that he has become a god-like figure over the nations. But in reality, this moment marks only the beginning of his downfall. The very events that seem to give him ultimate power are the opening of the seals—the start of the judgments that will lead to his complete defeat at the return of Christ.
In short: The restrainer is the angel holding the key to the Abyss. Once removed, the demonic powers are unleashed, Satan is cast to earth, and the Antichrist rises in deceptive glory—only to discover too late that his “victory” is the prelude to his final destruction.
